Warm weather is FINALLY upon us. We thought it would be useful to share some summer energy saving tips. That way, as the temperatures rise, your electric bill doesn’t have to!
Summer Energy Saving Tip #1:
Practice Natural Ventilation. It typically cools off at night in the Fox Valley & surrounding areas. Turn off your A/C at night & open your windows. When you wake up in the morning, close your windows & blinds to trap the cool air in & keep the hot air out. You can take it one step further & purchase window coverings that help to keep the heat out of your home.
Sumer Energy Saving Tip #2:
Keep your thermostat set as high as you can while still being comfortable. If you are not going to be home, set the temperature even higher. The smaller the difference between your indoor air temp & the outdoor air temperature, the lower your cooling bill will be. Avoid setting the thermostat lower than you would normally, just to cool off your home faster. It actually will not cool your home off any quicker, & could result in unnecessary expenses. If you do not already have a programable thermostat, invest in one. You can set the temperature to be higher for when nobody is home & program it to be lower for when you are home.
Summer Energy Saving Tip #3:
Fans are your friends. Using a fan can allow you to keep your air conditioning temperature up to 4 degrees warmer than you would without the use of one. When you are not in the room, turn the fan off. Fans work by creating a windchill effect – which means they work on people, not rooms. Utilize your bathroom fans when taking a shower or bath. These fans help to remove the heat & humidity created from the water. If you have a laundry room, it may be a good place to install another ventilation fan. Always make sure your kitchen, laundry & bathroom fans are vented to the outside of your home, not just to the attic.
