There are many myths surrounding Radon gas. Ranging from who Radon affects, to what homes should be tested, there are many misconceptions that have grown into well known radon myths.
Radon Myth #1:
Radon testing is expensive. It is too time consuming and the testing is too difficult.
Actually, you can test your home with a self test for as little as $6. Using a licensed Radon measurement company is also quite affordable. As far as it being time consuming and difficult, there is not much that needs to be done on your end. Simply follow the instructions given to you from either your test package or from the measurement company.
Radon Myth #2:
Living with high levels of Radon isn’t a big deal.
This one couldn’t be further from the truth. Radon is a carcinogen that can lead to lung cancer. Over 21,000 deaths are attributed to Radon each year. Smokers are at even greater risk when they are exposed to high levels of Radon, as well as small children.
Radon Myth #3:
If my home has Radon, there isn’t anything I can do.
Having a radon mitigation system installed by a licensed professional means that the levels in your home will be reduced to below the action level of 4.0 pCi/L. If you want to sell your home, but you have high levels of radon, you will be required to have a system installed. Which leads us to Radon Myth #4…
Radon Myth #4:
I won’t be able to sell my home when they find out about my radon problem.
So long as your radon problem has been remediated with a radon mitigation system, your home sale is not blocked. Often times, a radon mitigation system can be used as a feature of your home. For some, it is a great selling point.
