We wrote last week in our Radon Resolution that you could send a letter to the editor. Well, we took our own advice & forwarded this letter to all of our local newspapers.
Dear Editor,
I am writing to bring awareness to the fact the January is National Radon Action Month. This has been designated by the EPA in hopes that a better understanding of the dangers of radon will be brought to our communities.
I am the owner of Trinity Radon Mitigation & have worked closely with many homeowners to make their homes a healthier place to live. Radon comes naturally from the earth, specifically from the breakdown of uranium in rocks & soil. It is radioactive & is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, & the leading cause among nonsmokers. Since it is an invisible, odorless & tasteless gas, the only way to know if your home has a high level is to have it tested.
In Illinois, approximately 41% of homes have high levels of radon. According to the Kendall County Health Department, 51% of homes tested have had levels above the EPAs action level of 4.0 pCi/L. Many people believe that their home does not have radon because of its age, location or because their neighbor doesn’t have it. These factors have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not a home has dangerous levels of radon. Since radon comes naturally from the earth, it doesn’t matter whether a home has a basement, crawlspace, is old or new. Radon could potentially be a problem.
In the spirit of National Radon Action Month, I wanted to let everyone know that it is easy to test to find out if you have a problem in your home. The Kendall County Health Department offers a coupon for a do-it-yourself kit right on their site. They also have a list of licensed radon testers & mitigators in our area. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact us at 630-554-1492 or info@TESyes.com. We are happy to help!
I urge everyone to start the New Year off right. Get your homes tested for radon!
Sincerely,
Phil Solecki
