Cooler weather is upon us, which means a higher electric bill. If you are anything like us, we are always looking for ways to save. There are many steps you can take to reduce your electric bill. Below are a few of our favorites:
1) Change the temperature of your water heater to anywhere between 130 & 140 degrees. This will save you money, as well as protect your family from burning themselves.
2) Only run your dishwasher & washing machine when they’re full. Not only will it save you money on your water bill, but it will save you money on your electric bill too!
3) Use a power strip for your electronics. There is such a thing as vampire power – but it also isn’t practical to go around unplugging your TV, DVD player, game console, stereo, the list goes on and on. With a power strip, you can save on your electric bill by having one switch to turn off, stopping the drain of power!
4) You should replace the filter in your furnace once a month. It can save you up to $60 a year on your electric bill, as well as prolong the life of your furnace.
5) Layer it up! Instead of cranking the heat, snuggle under a blanket. Put on a sweatshirt & socks. A common recommendation is to keep your furnace at 68 during the day, and lower when everyone is sleeping.
6) Get rid of those drafts. Seal any cracks or leaks in your house. These cracks let the heat out and the cold in. You can purchase caulk & weather-stripping seals at most home improvement stores. Good places to check for leaks are doorways, windows, vents, and outlets.
While these changes may seem minor, they can add up to big savings on your electric bill. What are some things that you do to help reduce your electric bill?
