Will County, IL Radon Mitigation
Radon is a radioactive, carcinogenic gas that can cause lung cancer. It is part of the radioactive decay chain of naturally occurring uranium in soil. By passing through soil, it enters buildings and structures where people live, work and gather in Will County.
Nine times denser than air, radon also is the heaviest known gas. At the same time, because it contains only one atom, it can penetrate many other materials such as leather and paper with ease.
You can’t see, taste or smell radon, and unlike home pollutants such as carbon monoxide, its adverse effects on health are often delayed. A person can be exposed to radon for years without being aware.
Some studies suggest children may be particularly sensitive to radon because their respiration rate is higher and their body cells divide more rapidly, making them more vulnerable to radiation.
Managing radon gas in occupied and inhabited spaces is vital to good health. Finding out if you’re at risk requires accurate testing. At Trinity Electrical and Radon Mitigation, we specialize in swift, simple and cost-effective radon mitigation for Will County.
Will County, IL Radon
A Brief Background on the Gas
What we now know as radon gas was identified in 1900 when German physicist Frederich Dorn discovered and referred to it as radium emanation. Its name later became radon in 1923.
The public became much more aware of it in 1984. While working at a Pennsylvania nuclear power plant, American construction worker Stanley Watras began triggering radiation monitors even though the plant didn’t yet store nuclear materials. Inspection revealed the cause to be radon and radon progeny clinging to his clothes and skin.
With this knowledge, Watras insisted that his home also be tested for radiation contamination. The results revealed high levels of radon gas, and his case prompted further testing throughout his region. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) followed with its own additional awareness campaigns and passed the Indoor Air Quality Research Act in 1986. States continued creating their own radon programs as well.
