Kendall County, IL Radon Mitigation

kendall county radon mitigation

Radon gas is part of the radioactive decay chain of naturally occurring uranium in soil. Through the soil, it enters homes, schools and other buildings where people live, work and gather.

Invisible, odorless and tasteless, radon can be found at elevated levels in every Illinois county, including Kendall. It is by far the greatest source of radiation exposure among the general public.

Radon can create health risks if not detected and treated correctly. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and the top cause among non-smokers.

Unlike other home pollutants such as carbon monoxide, radon’s effect on a person’s health is usually delayed. You may be exposed to radon for months or years without being aware.

Precise testing is the only way to find out if you’re at risk. Trinity Electrical and Radon Mitigation specializes in quick, easy and inexpensive radon mitigation for Kendall County.

Kendall County, IL Radon

Brief History of Radon

Radon was discovered in 1900 by German physicist Frederich Dorn, who called it radium emanation. The gas later became known by its current name in 1923.

The radon issue became much more public through American construction worker Stanley Watras in 1984. At the time, Watras worked at a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. Although the plant did not yet store nuclear materials, he began triggering radiation monitors when leaving work. Inspection revealed the cause to be radon and radon progeny clinging to his clothes and skin.

Watras urged the testing of his home for radiation contamination, and high levels of radon gas were discovered. His case prompted a regional testing program. The EPA soon followed with its own awareness campaigns. In 1986, it passed the Indoor Air Quality Research Act. States began to develop radon programs as well.
