A Short Review

Radon was first observed as a gaseous, highly radioactive element by English physicist Ernest Rutherford in 1899. The discovery was also credited in 1900 to German physicist Frederich Dorn, who called it radium emanation. In particular, Rutherford noted radon’s alpha radiation and Dorn detected that radium was releasing a gas. The gas later became known by its current name in 1923.

American construction worker Stanley Watras made the issue much more public in 1984. At the time, Watras worked at a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. He began triggering radiation monitors when leaving work even though the plant did not yet store radioactive materials. Upon inspection, the cause was identified as radon and radon progeny clinging to his clothes and skin.

He pushed for radiation-contamination testing of his home. High levels of radon gas were discovered. His case spurred a regional testing program. The EPA followed with its own awareness campaigns and soon after passed the Indoor Air Quality Research Act in 1986. States started developing radon programs as well.
